Shockwave Treatment

Shockwave Therapy For Horses

Extracorporeal shockwaves are high-pressure sound waves used for therapeutic purposes on horses. Shockwave therapy was originally developed to treat kidney stones in humans. The veterinary community has taken this technology and applied shockwave therapy for horses to suspensory ligaments, kissing spine, and other orthopedic conditions.

In equine field services, we use a High Medical Technologies (HMT) – Versatron that generates electrohydraulic shock waves (waves with a large focal volume). There has been some research directed at explaining the exact mechanism of shockwaves. Some studies have shown it to be pain relieving; others have shown that there are some changes at a microscopic level such as neovascularization and changes in cytokines. Although the exact mechanism has not been proven, there is a volume of anecdotal evidence that suggests that it is an alternative therapy that can be considered for a variety of musculoskeletal problems.

"My husband and I were on vacation in Prescott the weekend before Christmas when our dog got sick. We went online and saw that this hospital had great reviews so we called to make an appointment first thing Saturday morning and they were able to get us in that same morning. Even though we were from out-of-town, they treated us great. Very nice, professional and lovingly took care of our dog. We were in and out in less than an hour and they fixed our dog right up! She's doing great. I can see why this hospital is so highly rated!"
